Hazardous Waste
The Hazardous Waste Program is designed to protect public health and the environment by ensuring hazardous materials and hazardous wastes are safely handled, stored, transported, and disposed of according to state and federal laws. In California, the is the state agency primarily responsible for developing and enforcing hazardous waste regulations under both the federal Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and California’s more stringent hazardous waste laws. DTSC oversees hazardous waste generators, treatment and disposal facilities, cleanup programs, and statewide policy development. Certified Unified Program Agencies (CUPAs) are local agencies authorized by the state to implement the Hazardous Waste Program at the local level.
